Senology Surgery

The Breast Surgery Unit (Senology) has all the requirements to be considered a Breast Unit, i.e. a Functional Unit, by European recognition standards. This means that the department sees the appropriate number of cases and has the right number of dedicated specialists. The standards guarantee the best healing results, fewer side effects, and more acceptable cosmetic and psychological results. Almost 5,000 annual instrumental examinations are carried out in this ward. Minimally invasive diagnostic techniques such as fine needle  aspirations, cytology, and needle aspiration biopsies (NAB) are performed in addition to digital mammography and MRI's. In dealing with oncologic pathologies, wherever possible, a conservative operation is performed to help identify the centers of sentinel lymph nodes using radio-guided procedures.
The surgery is performed mainly in as deep in analgesia as possible (using pain medication) without having to turn to general anaesthesia. In cases where there is a destruction of sorts, almost always there is a prosthetic reconstruction immediately carried out in the same operation, always aiming to aesthetically remodel the other breast. Finally, particular attention is given to the communication, psychological support, and accuracy of information pertaining to cancer pathologies. This is especially important in regards to the biological characteristics of the pathology and in the definition of treatment parameters.
