The Abano Terme General Hospital: a half-century long history
The Abano Terme General Hospital is an outstanding multi-specialized center founded in 1961 as a private nursing home by a few medical professionals. These doctors were motivated by the desire to give a qualified response to the needs of the existing hospitalization situation in the Euganean Hills and thermal spa area. Over the years, the Abano Terme General Hospital has developed both as a structure and as health care provider. What started initially as a 90-bed center, has blossomed into the existing 205-licensed-bed hospital. 170 of these beds are accredited with the National Health System.
The Abano Terme General Hospital has an emergency room which operates 24 hours a day, and also functions as a SUEM unit (urgent and emergency medical care). It is part of Padua's control center network (118) for urgent and emergency rescue, for both ordinary and assisted medical transport, and for intensive and sub-intensive reanimation/resuscitation services. For its operative capability and its reach within its surrounding territory (80,000 residents and over 450,000 visitors in the spa area from March to October), the Abano Terme General Hospital became Health Unit No. 16 of Padua (ULSS No 16) on January 1, 1987. This was confirmed by the decision of the Veneto Region Council No. 860 on February 27, 1987.
A careful investment policy, especially in recent years, has led to an overall renovation of the center and its technologies, information systems, and above all, its personnel. Due to the hospital's many collaborations with major Italian universities and research foundations, outstanding professionals from all over Italy have been hired to work at the center.
The presence of the Leonardo Foundation for Medical Sciences, which is involved in staff training, the creation of new research projects, and in helping underdeveloped countries, has been extremely valuable in contributing to the hospital's growth.Total patient care, which is the guiding principle of our activity, puts us in a continuous search for organizational and operational models which promote integration between the professional components working within the hospital. This is done in order to ensure maximum safety in both inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical treatments. The hospital's objective is to give high quality patient care in the most comfortable environmental conditions possible, while respecting the person's harmony and integrity.
Due to paying attention to these details, the hospital has gained significant importance on the regional and national scale. The exponential growth in our approval-rating is demonstrated by the fact that today, out of over 13,000 annual admissions, over 50% of patients come from outside the Health Unit No 16 area.
