Nuclear Medicine
The Nuclear Medicine Department at the Abano Terme General Hospital was inagurated in 1974. Since that time, the department has always been interested in the application of in vivo diagnostics.
This method is based upon the administration of radiopharmaceuticals which act as a tracing map of particular biological phenomenoms, and accumulating in the investigated organ, allow the doctors to obtain images using special instruments called gamma cameras.
The modern radiopharmaceuticals used in today's nuclear medicine are able to naturally cancel out the radioactivity in a very short time with evident benefits for both the patient and the environment. In addition, mordern nuclear medicine doesn't pollute and can also be used in pediatric medicine.
To the traditional static acquisition methods (Thyroid scintigraphy, pulmonary scintigraphy, hepatic scintigraphy, and bone scintigraphy) along with the dynamic ones (Renal angioscintigraphy, urinary cyst scintigraphy, hepatobiliary scintigraphy, and gastric emptying tests) the department has recently added a combination CT-PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scanning machine.
Moreover, the department boasts two double-headed rotating gamma cameras: one dedicated to traditional and total body inquiries, and one optimized in radiological type inquiries. Both are also suitable for patients who may be overweight.
In the last few years the department has intensified its relationship with orthopedic doctors who have found our Nuclear Medicine service to be a valid and reliable support in treating skeletal pathologies and in post prosthetic surgery check-ups of the hip, knee, and shoulder.
Even surgeons, in particular senologists and plastic surgeons, apply these methodologies in looking at the sentinel lymph node and for optimizing techniques used in neoplastic operations.
