General Medicine

The General Medicine Ward at the Abano Terme General Hospital can be found on the third floor (elevator 4 and stairwell C). The department treats major internistic diseases of patients who find their way to the ward by way of the hospital's emergency room, intensive care unit, or specialist clinics. Access may also be made directly by the suggestion of an individual's General Practitioner (GP), or by the patient's own request after having had an interview with the medical staff.

The ward is divided into two units:

  • Internal Medicine
  • Pneumology (Pulmonology).

In total, the ward has 60 beds, including some for sub-intensive respiratory care used in the treatment of patients who require a more serious monitoring of vital signs and of their mechanical ventilation (non-invasive).
Pulmonary disease, especially chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), presents a serious public health issue causing high incidences of disability and mortality worldwide. Combating this terrible trend and managing the pathological condition in the best ways possible are the key objectives of the ward's specialists.

The bed stations used in sub-intensive respiratory care for the treatment of patients with serious conditions can achieve outstanding results when coupled with early respiratory rehabilitation programs.
A multidisciplinary team of professionals collaborates to design the personalized rehabilitation programs. Another one of the principal objectives of the department is the proper diagnosis and therapeutic classification of   chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis of the liver in its various forms. The multidisciplinary approach allows the doctors to treat the frequent complications of the disease: ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, and bleeding from esophageal varices.

The integration of the internists' activities with those of the surgical unit, which has  developed a specialized sector for the surgical treatment of neoplasty and secondary liver pathologies, allows for excellent results to be reached in approaching disease therapy. It is a harmonious operating synergy which permits the hospital to continuously give more appropriate and efficient assistance.

Thanks to this synergy developed with colleagues from vascular surgery, interventional radiology, and the eco-color-doppler diagnostic service, patients with vascular ulcers based on ischemic arterial diseases of the  lower limbs are examined and treated in the ward.

The experience and tight collaboration with colleagues from the Diabetic Foot Unit completes the network of therapeutic pathways necessary for these types of diseases which can be extremely serious and disabling.
