General Information

The Abano Terme General Hospital was founded in 1961 as a private care home by a few medical professionals who were motivated by the desire to give a qualified response to the needs of the existing hospital situation in the Euganean Hills and thermal spa area.
What started initially as a 90-bed center, and then grew both structurally and in terms of services rendered, finally blossomed into the existing 205-licensed-bed hospital. 170 of these beds are accredited with the National Health System.

For its operative capability and its reach within the surrounding territory, The Abano Terme General Hospital became Health Unit No. 16 of Padua (ULSS No 16) on January 1, 1987, pursuant to art. 43, paragraph 2 of Italian Law 23/12/1978 b. 833. This was confirmed by the decision of the Veneto Region Council No. 860 on February 27, 1987. The acknowledgement as Padua’s Health Unit 16 (ULSS No 16) was again declared by the Region’s social-sanitary plan for the three-year period from 1984-1986 approved with the L.R. 2/4/1984 n. 13 and by the successive plan for the three-year period from 1989-1991 approved with L.R. 20/7/1991 n. 21.

To this day the hospital is subdivided in three operative areas: Medicine, Surgery, and Rehabilitation/ Convalescence, which are articulated into specific operating units.

The hospital’s activities are completed by the following fundamental and mandatory services:

•    Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging (MRI and CT scans)
•    Analysis Laboratory
•    Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation
•    Clinics
•    Thermal Spa Treatments
•    Radiotherapy
•    Nuclear Medicine

The Abano Terme General Hospital has an emergency room which operates 24 hours a day, and also functions as a SUEM unit (urgent and emergency medical care).  It is part of Padua's control center network (118) for urgent and emergency rescue,  and for both ordinary and assisted medical transport.

Reach in Surrounding Area: 80,000 residents and over 450,000 visitors in the Abano and Montegrotto spa areas from March to October, of which about 250,000 are foreigners.

The hospital ensures, through the organization of its wards, services, and outpatient clinics, and through the hands-on coordination of operations by the Medical Director, the maximum safety in medical and surgical treatments in both inpatient and outpatient services. This is done by pursuing our objective of high quality patient care in the most comfortable environmental conditions possible, all the while maintaining the utmost respect for each patient.

For all of the doctors working in the structure, each of whom assume a personal responsibility in treating the patients, the hospital guarantees the availability of all its resources and instruments necessary for diagnosing and treating every case.

In 2009 there were:
•    13,063 hospitalizations, of which 9,701 had surgical interventions, for a total of 49,751 inpatient days
•    About 360,000 external outpatient services
•    About 274,000 laboratory analyses
•    About 86,000 Emergency Room cases

The Abano Terme General Hospital has started the path to being quality certified under  ISO 9001 / UNI EN ISO 900 and has already obtained quality certification for its analysis laboratory.
